At least two check devices shall be installed in the inert gas supply system, one of which shall be a water seal, to prevent hydrocarbon vapors from returning to the machinery space or any gas space under all normal conditions of ship trim, list, and motion. It is crucial to maintain the water supply of the sealing facility at all times, especially when the inert gas system is shut down.
The deck water seal is the simplest type of water seal. Its disadvantage is that water droplets may be carried along with the inert gas. Although this does not affect the quality of the inert gas, it may increase corrosion. Therefore, a demister shall be installed at the gas outlet of the water seal to trap the liquid droplets entrained in the gas flow.

There might also be some equipments which require demister in whole circle or rectangular shape. In this application, the demister mesh is mostly made of PP (polypropylene) material. The demister grating can be either PP or stainless steel. I think SS grids can be welded much stronger than PP grids.
